Fun with my new scale...

I forgot...the point of this blog is journal about weight loss, right?

First off...I am 95% happy with my purchase at this point. It does everything as advertised, looks stylish, and now I can know my weight down to the tenth.

The only downside is the flimsy piece of plastic they use to cover the battery area. I can't just jump on the scale and need to move it whenever I weigh myself. In the short time I've had it, the battery cover on the bottom has already come off twice. A piece of scotch tape may be in order.

I like it so much, that I've become somewhat obsessive with checking my weight these days. I probably will jump on 2 -3 times daily. And here is the interesting thing. My weight fluctuates 2 - 4 pounds within any given day! The biggest difference is between weighing my self when I go to bed (Been as high as 195) and when I wake up in the morning (been as low as 191).

I have two questions for the group:

  • Any thoughts on what causes such a shift in weight? Water weight?
  • Is there a recognized "best time" that you should be weighing yourself?

Obviously, I will continue my Monday after working out ritual weigh in to keep consistent. Just curious what the common wisdom is...

OOOH nice new scale. I have been thinking of a getting a new one (with fancier stuff like measuring body fat and dehydration) - but I think I'll stick to the one I have till get closer to goal weight at least.

Any way, as far as weight fluctuations - it is normal, don't fret it. Pick a time of day, and a day a week and stick to it. Naked or in underwear is best, since that eliminates the variable of weight of difference clothes you might be wearing.

I've gained weight just from smelling food, and gained five pounds from just one meal I had as a treat after months of dieting.

I've learned after over 60 weeks on the current healthy for life eating plan (and several decades of dieting) the scale is just a way to moniter a number, it is NOT the be all and end all of one's health. It's a good guideline, but I don't fret over the daily, weekly changes as long as the month to month change is in the right direction and I keep my self honest about the food choices and activity that I'm doing.

So far I've lost over 80 lbs, with about 60ish to go.

You should keep the scale in the same place. If you keep moving it around it will lose its accuracy. I had a really nice crystal glass scale that my wife and daughter started taking to the bathroom to get weighed and then move it to the bedroom all the time and before long it was five pounds off and once they get messed up then forget it.

I had to buy another scale and it never moves from the corner where everyone must go if they want to weigh themselves. A scale is your best friend!!

LOL! I have no 'wisdom' on this subject, but I have my think-sos!

I generally weigh myself about 30 minutes after I wake up and always in the same clothes - my walking outfit. I too can weight several pounds heavier in the evenings than I do in the mornings. It is strange isn't it? My favorite way to tell I'm doing something right is how baggy my clothes are fitting me.

I've been thinking about buying a new scale that measures body fat as well as my weight. I'm going to continue thinking about it for awhile.

I knew it! You are a woman trapped in a man's body. Weighing yourself two to three times a day. That's what they teach you at dance practice in 7th grade.

I weigh all the time. However, the 'stark-naked weight' I report on my blog is in the morning. After I've taken care of non-girly business. My 'official weight' is on the weight watchers scale ... about 2-3 pounds off from mine.
