Weigh In - Week 12

Well, at least I get 1 post in a week these days...sheesh!

On the positive note, my weight loss continues nicely. Another 3 lbs loss brings total weight loss to 35 lbs in 12 weeks (roughly 3 months)...

A few funny things about this week...I've gotten a little greedy in my weight loss and have been checking the scale more often. On Friday, I was still at 204 after working out. Since this weekend was Father's Day, I decided to let loose a little and have a buffalo chicken sandwich (so tasty!) and a few hefewiezens (beers) at a local watering hole. So I was positive that I was going to lose a max of 1 lbs this week (or break even for the first time).

I'm not quite sure what happens to my body over the weekends, but when I checked in at 201 last night, I was pleasantly shocked to say the least...I'm not going to argue, but I figure I am overdue for the "plateau effect" to kick in.

On another note, I haven't told my wife about this site, but she does know about my goal to lose a pound per week over 50 weeks. While she has been cheering me on (after all, she gets the benefit of having a healthy, leaner husband as well), lately she's tamed down the enthusiasm. When I told her about my 3 lbs loss last night, she even questioned whether the weight loss was healthy for me...

Here's my take: As I've said all along, I don't believe that a weight loss program should include anything that you don't plan on doing when you get off the weight loss program. For example, I am not taking any of the fad pills out there to help me lose weight. Why? Because simple logic dictates that I need to keep taking the pills to keep the weight off. The pills are a temporary and expensive crutch for temporary weight loss.

The only things I am doing differently are:

  • Working out 3x / week.

  • Cutting out a lot of sugar (mostly in the form of cola).

  • Cutting out a majority fried / fast foods.

  • Having a healthy breakfast each morning.

  • Add in more salads / fruits / nuts into my daily routine.

So here are my questions to myself:
  • Do I dislike any of the changes that I've instituted?

  • Are any of these changes overly expensive or time consuming?

  • Do I view any of these changes as something I just have to do for a specific period of time and then, when the weight is off, resume my old lifestyle?

The answer to all of these questions is "no". There is a slight increase in expenses in food and $50 / month for a gym membership. I am blessed (or cursed) with a job that pays well enough to offset the increase in expenses. But really, is $1200 in additional annual expense too much to pay to live a healthy lifestyle.

So to answer my wife's question, I think my weight loss has been healthy. If my body decides that my current eating and exercising regimen results in 2+ lbs of weight loss a week, who am I to argue?

Bonus: No need to guess on this week's route marker, huh?

Hi Jeff!

I'm sorry that I've not been throwing my 2 cents in more, between vacation and then being sick...well, it's just not been pretty.

I think that your weight loss (while frustrating to me because it seems to be melting off of you insanely easy) has been done in a very healthy fashion. It's hard for women to understand how different it is for men when it comes to taking off the weight. We're just not built to lose weight like that, at least none of the women I know are! She's just concerned about you- and maybe even a little jealous. She's just given birth and may be holding on to some post baby weight. She may feel like you are telling her to lose weight, even though you aren't. Just remember that her body, and hormones have been through some pretty tramatic changes. It may be a bit bittersweet for her to see you looking all thin and trim if she is feeling 100% the opposite. I say all of that with the utmost of respect, just trying to give you some possibilites for the lessened enthusiasm.

All of that said - I think that you have nothing to fear health wise, you are being super smart in your quest for fitness.

p.s. Thank you for the marriage appropriate compliments on my new pic. :) You made me laugh!!

Jeff,

Take it from me, you wife is probably a little frustrated with the fact that this is so easy for you.

See I have been trying to lose the same 15lbs since I met my husband and put them on in the first year of our relationship...and then he goes in about January of this year and decides he is going to lose some weight and get in shape...and he has lost 60lbs! and he looks amazing, skinnier then I have ever seen him, but healthy as all get up and looks great.

Yes it is incredibly tough for me to watch it and see it because i haven't been able to budge more then like 6-8 of my 15lbs and they don't stay away either...and his has. But since I love him so...I just smile when he tells me how much the scale says...when inside I am like...HE WEIGHS LESS THEN ME!! AHHH!!

So no worries about your wife, maybe just slow up on telling her how much you have loss unless she asks. You can always come here and blog about it and shout it out and we are all here to listen and rave for you :)

Good Luck and keep up the amazing work!!

Hey Jeff =0) I agree with both the above ladies. She may be concerned about your amount of weight loss because I was always told it wasn't healthy to loose more than 2 pounds a week. Maybe that is just for a female body though? Everything you've done has sounded very healthy. Perhaps when you get closer to your goal weight, it would be wise not to lose 3-5 pounds a week. Hehe. With me for example, if I woke up one morning to find myself 130, it wouldn't be smart for me to try my hardest to continue losing weight.

Re: Thanks for the comment =0)

No, I'm not a vegetarian; I'm just lazy. Since I'm the only person I'm cooking for, it seems like a pain to cook things most nights. "things" referring mostly to meat. hehe.

I love the Fiber One bars. They are crazy high in fat, but they make for an exceptionally tastey snack. Unfortunately, everyone else in the area has apparently found them too, seeing as that the store seems to be constantly in need of a restock on them.
